Walt’s Pond
On April 10th, 2026 our family was able to purchase a beautiful 40 acre parcel that belonged to the late Walter Carnes.
This land has over 22 acres or woods, a five acre pond, fields and a beautiful home-place with a lot of yard space. We have nature trails, muscadine vines, black berries and more!
Walt had a vision here, and our family wants to keep his vision alive for generations to come.
Wildlife Conservation
July 24th, 2026 Walt’s Pond division of Attakulla Ranch was accepted into the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, Wildlife Conservation Program. This amendment was accepted by the Union County, NC Tax Assessors Office.
The Grigg Family is dedicated to working on a plan with the NC Wildlife Commission on maintaining a healthy habitat for wildlife here in Union County.
We will be adding wood duck boxes around the pond and song bird boxes around the fields / woods. In addition to the NC Wildlife Commission, the property also joined the National Wildlife Federation and the NC Wildlife Federation / Union County Wildlife Chapter.
Meet Mr. Walt
Walter Vachel Carnes, born in Union County on April 10th, 1939. Owning this land since the 1960’s. It was a place he called home and left his legacy.
For almost 20 years, Walt was like a Dad to me, teaching me how to drive a tractor, work on engines and garden. The amount of time doing things together, I could never match to anyone else. Walt was my friend, my best friend. Now I have a chance with my family to carry on his legacy and ours at the same place he called home.
On June 3rd, 2025 he passed on from this life. The Grigg Family was able to purchase his land on what would have been his 87th Birthday. This photo was taken in 2023 at Wiseman’s View in Burke County, NC. Walt loved the mountains and I was able to get him to a mountain top one more time.
